"How arrogant and self-centered some members of our species can be to believe that humans are the measure of all things and that any question of purpose unquestionably refers to us humans. Nature still holds a good deal of mystery, and the life of this planet is the most diverse assemblage of complex phenomena in the known universe. For these reasons alone nature is valuable beyond our comprehension. If we could mature and move beyond the unfounded theological question of what purpose nature serves, we could more appreciate nature for what it is - a spectacular 3.6 billion year old explosion of diversity, complexity, mystery, and beauty that has next to nothing to do with us, except that we humans are one of the very recent additions to that incomprehensible diversity."
